There are few countries in the world whose movie industry produces so many films in such a short period, which creates an endless variety of genres from action to romance from comedy to drama to horror.

It’s been several years since Bollywood has been spotlighted, but this decade was when Indian cinema reached new heights.

After several years of stagnant talent, some really good films were made. Some of the best films of the decade are listed below. Feel free to comment on some you have seen.

1. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

In the movie Taare Zameen Par, a young boy is labelled as a problem child because he can’t fit in with the school system. Instead of letting him be a problem child, he is sent to a boarding school by his parents, where he meets a group of kids with car trouble. He helps them and they help him. The story takes place in India and the boarding school is named Zindagi Academy. The main character of the movie is Rohan Mehra, who was the face on the poster of the film.

2. Lagaan (2001)

The movie Lagaan is your typical story about a boy and his cricket team. It takes place in India and is set in the period 1887 to 1888. The film shows the struggles of the Indians during this time. The main characters of the movie are Rahul Bose who played Lalit Kumar, Amol Palekar who played Khan Bahadur, Sharmila Tagore who played Annu Kapoor, and Kirron Kher who played Saajan Singh.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

The movie Dil Chahta Hai is a story about three friends who have grown apart from each other after college. Their paths cross again when they start their professional careers. It takes place in India and is set in New York. The main characters of the movie are Shahrukh Khan who played a Delhi-based cab driver, Salman Khan who played Mihir Verma, Ritesh Deshmukh who played Chawla, Priyanka Chopra who played Sophie Mundy, and Vinod Khanna who played his father.

4. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

The movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is the story of four friends who meet in college. They go through several ups and downs in their lives throughout their careers. It takes place in India and is set in the period 1887 to 1969. The main characters of the movie are Aamir Khan who played Salim Mehra, Salman Khan who played Rahul Mehra, Gracy Singh who played Mummyji, and Rani Mukherjee who played Pooja Mehra.

5. Devdas (2002)

The movie Devdas is set in India and takes place in time 1905 to 1920. It is about a young man named Devdas, who is in love with a married woman named Parvathi. He is torn between duty and desire in doing what is right. The movie was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The main characters of the movie are Shahid Kapoor who played Rahul Devdas, Deepika Padukone who played Parvati, Abhishek Bachchan who played Tulsidas Datta, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who played Parvati.

6. Omkara (2006)

The film Omkara is a story about a little boy’s quest for his missing mother. It takes place in India and is set in the time 1900 to 1930. The main character of the movie is Saif Ali Khan who played Ajay Kumar.

7. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

The film Kal Ho Naa Ho is the story of two brothers’ lives after their parents’ divorce. It takes place in India and is set in the period 1993 to 2004. The main characters of the movie are Akshay Kumar who played Kal Ho Naa Ho, Abhishek Bachchan who played Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Sonam Kapoor who played Amrita.

8. 3 Idiots (2009)

The movie 3 Idiots is the story of four friends who are struggling with their lives after failing their college exams. They go to trying to solve their problems. The movie is set in India and takes place in the period 1990 to 2002. The main characters of the movie are Aamir Khan who played Ram Singh, and Kareena Kapoor who played Mayar.

9. Rang De Basanti (2006)

The film Rang De Basanti is about four friends who are struggling in their lives after college.

After one of their best friend’s dies in a car accident, they go back to their roots for redemption. The movie takes place in India and is set in the period 1994 to 2006. The main characters of the movie are Aamir Khan who played Ranga “Rang” Ganguly, and Siddharth Narayan who played Bhaskar Banerjee.

10. Saathiya (2002)

The film Saathiya is a story about two sisters and their father/husband who wants them to be obedient instead of helping each other like they usually do. The movie takes place in India and is set in time 1993 to 2002. The main characters of the movie are Angad Bedi who played Ravi, and Konkona Sen Sharma who played Patchu.
